Over the past few years, cloud video conferencing has gone from an occasional convenience to a daily habit. Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams have made collaboration across cities and borders effortless, and that is not in question. Yet whenever we talk with IT leaders at government agencies, defense units, financial institutions and hospitals, the same question comes up: "Where does the content of this meeting actually live?" For a routine status call the answer may not matter. When a meeting involves classified information, trading decisions, customer credit reviews or patient records, handing the audio, video and recordings to a third-party server overseas is a risk that cannot be waved away.

That question is exactly where the Ze Yu R&D team started when we built our MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) video conferencing system. Our design philosophy is simple: "Your meetings should take place on your home ground." In this article we start from data sovereignty, explain the fundamental difference between an on-premises MCU and cloud services, and walk through several key design decisions behind Ze Yu MCU in performance, compatibility and human-centered design.

1. Data Sovereignty: The Trade-off Between Cloud Convenience and Confidentiality

Cloud video services are SaaS by nature: the software, the servers and the data are all hosted by the provider. This frees organizations from building and operating anything, but it also means every byte of a meeting must cross the organization's network boundary. For public agencies governed by cybersecurity regulations, for banks under financial supervision, or for hospitals bound by patient confidentiality, data leaving the country is a compliance red line in itself, regardless of how reputable the provider is.

An on-premises MCU takes a different path. The entire system is installed in the customer's own server room or a designated private cloud. Audio and video encoding, signaling, meeting management and recording all happen inside the organization's network. No stream passes through a third-party server, and no recording is stored abroad. The security team can manage video conferencing the same way it manages any internal server, with existing audit, backup and access-control practices applied unchanged.

The cost structure changes as well. Cloud services bill per seat per month, so the larger the organization and the longer the subscription, the more staggering the spend. An on-premises deployment is a one-time build: whether 50 or 500 people use it, the cost does not balloon with scale. Over a three-to-five-year total cost of ownership, on-premises is often the more economical choice for mid-sized and large organizations.

Cloud services solve the problem of convenience. An on-premises MCU solves the problem of who controls the data. The two are not in conflict, but for critical meetings the answer has to be explicit.

2. No Compromise on Performance: GPU Acceleration and Full HD at 60fps

A common worry about on-premises systems is whether a self-hosted platform can match the picture quality and stability of the big cloud players. This is where Ze Yu MCU invests the most architecturally. The heaviest workload in a multipoint meeting is compositing: the server must decode multiple video streams in real time, mix them into one canvas, and re-encode the result for every participant. Ze Yu MCU natively supports NVIDIA GPU hardware encoding and decoding. With a single RTX 3090, the server can transcode and composite dozens of 1080p streams simultaneously, more than ten times the throughput of a CPU-only approach.

GPU acceleration is what makes 1920×1080 at a smooth 60fps the standard configuration rather than a luxury that only appears when the network happens to be good. Small text on slides stays crisp, motion has no ghosting, and with H.264 hardware encoding plus zero-latency tuning, end-to-end delay is kept in the millisecond range. If a customer does not have a GPU yet, the system automatically falls back to CPU software encoding, so they can go live first and scale the hardware as usage grows.

3. Compatibility: Browsers, IP Phones and Legacy Endpoints at the Same Table

No enterprise communication environment is a blank slate. An organization may own Polycom or Cisco video endpoints purchased years ago, SIP phones integrated with its IP-PBX, and external participants who simply want to click a link and join. Ze Yu MCU supports all three major protocols so every one of these devices can sit in the same meeting:

  • WebRTC: Participants join by opening a link in Chrome, Edge, Safari or another mainstream browser. Nothing to install, no barrier to entry, and traveling staff can join from a laptop.
  • SIP: Full SIP support connects the MCU to existing IP-PBX systems and SIP phones, folding video conferencing into the unified communications architecture already in place.
  • H.323: A built-in H.323 gateway supports H.225 call signaling and H.245 media negotiation. Existing Polycom, Cisco and Lifesize endpoints only need to point their Gatekeeper at the MCU to dial in, protecting years of equipment investment.

On the deployment side, Ze Yu MCU uses a Docker-based microservice architecture. The media engine, WebRTC gateway, H.323 gateway and management console each run as independent containers that scale with load. A standard deployment is completed within one to two working days once hardware is ready, and upgrades only replace the relevant container image without affecting other services, delivering genuinely zero-downtime maintenance.

4. Bringing the "Sense of a Seat" Back to Video Meetings: Smart Seating

Beyond the specifications, we kept asking a more human question: why do online meetings always lack the sense of order a physical meeting room has? Walk into a boardroom and the chair sits at the head, department heads take their places in turn, and one glance tells you who has not arrived. On most video platforms, tile order is decided by who joined first, and the manager has to call the roll every single time.

Ze Yu MCU's exclusive Smart Seating feature was designed for exactly this. When scheduling a meeting, the host picks a layout template from 3×3, 4×4, 5×5 up to 6×6, then drags each participant into a fixed position on the canvas, just like assigning seats in a physical room. Once the meeting begins, any empty tile means that person has not joined yet: no roll call, one glance is enough. The arrangement is saved with the meeting settings, so a weekly management meeting is configured once and applied automatically every week after.

5. Who Needs an On-Premises MCU?

Ze Yu MCU does not compete head-on with cloud video services; it serves a different tier of security requirements. From our customer experience, the following organizations benefit most from an on-premises deployment:

  • Government agencies and defense units: Classified meetings are prohibited from public clouds. Audio and video must stay inside the internal network, and command centers need multipoint dispatch, ticker announcements and meeting recording.
  • Financial institutions and hospitals: Trading decisions, credit reviews and remote consultations require complete role-based access control and operation audit logs so that every communication is traceable.
  • Large enterprises and multinational groups: Subscription fees for hundreds of offices and thousands of employees add up dramatically over time. Build once, use indefinitely, and let existing H.323 endpoints connect seamlessly.
  • Command centers that need an "eye in the sky": Ze Yu MCU can bring live drone footage directly into the meeting room, letting commanders in disaster response, infrastructure inspection and search-and-rescue see the aerial view and ground reports on one composited screen.

Notably, many customers adopt a dual-track strategy: routine meetings stay on the existing cloud service, while meetings involving confidentiality and compliance requirements move to Ze Yu MCU. The two systems run independently without conflict, preserving the convenience of the cloud while giving critical meetings the highest level of protection.
